Clusters in the Arrival Directions of 2 × 1017-eV Cosmic Rays Detected at the Yakutsk EAS Array

چکیده
1. Primary cosmic radiation (PCR) of ultrahigh energies (E0 > 4 × 1017 eV) is thought to consist primarily of charged particles, protons, and nuclei of various chemical elements. These charged particles are strongly mixed by the magnetic field of the galaxy and distributed almost isotropically over the celestial sphere. For this reason, it is difficult to find the local sources of PCR. The above concept can be questioned because the PCR content has not been measured directly yet and conclusions based on extensive air shower (EAS) data are ambiguous and inconsistent.

Exploring arrival directions of UHECRs with the Yakutsk array
The data on arrival directions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) detected with the Yakutsk array are analyzed. The work is induced by the recent claim of the Pierre Auger collaboration for the significant correlation found between UHECRs and positions of nearby Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) on the celestial sphere; and no correlation the HiRes collaboration stands for. Conflicting data o...
متن کاملMeasuring extensive air showers with Cherenkov light detectors of the Yakutsk array: The energy spectrum of cosmic rays
The energy spectrum of cosmic rays in the range E ∼ 1015 eV to 6 × 1019 eV has been studied using the air Cherenkov light detectors of the Yakutsk array. The total flux of photons produced by relativistic electrons (including positrons as well, hereafter) of extensive air showers in the atmosphere is used as the energy estimator of the primary particle initiating a shower. The resultant differe...
متن کاملThe Extremely High Energy Cosmic Rays
Experimental results from Haverah Park, Yakutsk, AGASA and Fly’s Eye are reviewed. All these experiments work in the energy range above 10 eV. The ’dip’ structure around 10 eV in the energy spectrum is well established by all the experiments, though the exact position differs slightly. Fly’s Eye and Yakutsk results on the chemical composition indicate that the cosmic rays are getting lighter ov...
متن کاملMuon content of ultra-high-energy air showers: Yakutsk data versus simulations
We analyse a sample of 33 extensive air showers (EAS) with estimated primary energies above 2·1019 eV and high-quality muon data recorded by the Yakutsk EAS array. We compare, event-by-event, the observed muon density to that expected from CORSIKA simulations for primary protons and iron, using SIBYLL and EPOS hadronic interaction models. The study suggests the presence of two distinct hadronic...
متن کاملSmall-scale Anisotropy of Cosmic Rays above 1019 Ev Observed with the Akeno Giant Air Shower Array
With the Akeno Giant Air Shower Array, 581 cosmic rays above 1019 eV, 47 above 4] 1019 eV, and seven above 1020 eV were observed until 1998 August. The arrival direction distribution of these extremely high energy cosmic rays has been studied. While no signiÐcant large-scale anisotropy is found on the celestial sphere, some interesting clusters of cosmic rays are observed. Above 4 ] 1019 eV, th...
